The TARDIS arrives at an underwater base where a crew is haunted by ghostly figures of their dead colleagues. The Doctor investigates the source, discovering alien symbols and a mysterious signal. When he apparently dies, Clara must take charge. The episode introduces a bootstrap paradox and sets up a deeper mystery about the nature of the ghosts and their purpose.
The Doctor and Clara arrive at an underwater base where a crew is being hunted by ghostly figures after discovering a mysterious alien spacecraft.
The ghosts are revealed to be the transformed bodies of the crew, controlled by an alien signal to spread a message.
The ship is a hearse designed to transport a powerful being known as the Fisher King, whose signal causes the haunting events.
The Doctor treats it like a puzzle, using logic and observation to understand the rules behind the ghosts and their appearances.
The episode explores fear, communication, and the unknown, as well as the idea of interpreting signals and messages.
