In a Viking village under attack by alien warriors, the Doctor and Clara help defend the people. Clara inspires the Doctor to embrace compassion over strategy. A young woman named Ashildr is mortally wounded, and the Doctor uses alien technology to grant her immortality. This decision has far reaching consequences, as he realizes he may have altered history.
The Doctor is captured by Viking warriors and must help them face alien warriors called the Mire. He ends up inspiring the villagers through a story of heroism.
To help the Vikings fight back, the Doctor takes inspiration from their fears and legends, effectively creating the image that later becomes the myth of a legendary warrior.
Clara plays a key role in encouraging the Doctor to act and helps him connect emotionally with the villagers.
The Mire are advanced alien mercenaries who use technology to enhance themselves and conquer other civilizations.
The episode explores legacy, heroism, and the idea that stories and identity can shape reality.
